Introducing: The Art of the Picnic
PICNIC
(pĭk’nĭk) n.
1. A meal eaten outdoors, as on an excursion.
2. Slang. An easy task or a pleasant experience.
According to The Oxford English Dictionary, the word “picnic” originally referred to fashionable social entertainment in which each person contributed a share of the provisions and cites the first recorded use of “picnic” in English in 1748 in a letter from Lord Chesterfield to his son, referring to an assembly or social gathering.
Even in modern times, picnics are still regarded as a romantic dining experience. For culinarian James Beard, picnicking can be one of the supreme pleasures of outdoor life: “At its most elegant, it calls for the accompaniment of the best linens and crystal and china; at its simplest it
needs only a bottle of wine and items purchased from the local delicatessen as one passes through town.”
Whether enjoyed in a park with family in friends, on top of a mountain after a vigorous hike, or on your living room floor after a long day, there is still no better way to unwind, disconnect, and reward yourself the simple pleasures of life.
